CNC Light Painting: Deductive Perfect 3D Printing Light and Shadow Art

April 02, 2023

The OFweek 3D printing network has reported some news about 3D printing light and shadow art, and the beautiful light and shadow works are simply amazing. Gianluca (Owen) Pugliese is an artist who uses a variety of materials and builds his work through 3D printing . Recently, the main 3D printed material he used has turned into light.

Pugliese is currently working with WASP, a well-known Italian 3D printer manufacturer, to digitally capture the light source of motion on a 3D printer by setting the camera to a long exposure time in a dark environment. (CNC light painting)". Having said that, my friend may have understood that Pugliese is actually printing light.

“Before, the 3D printers I used were almost all in Cartesian mode,” Pugliese said. “Although the results are good, I am not completely satisfied. Then I tried the Delta 3D printer and found that this is what I want. need."

Pugliese created his own Delta-style 3D printer for the purpose of training through an open source project found on the Internet. Later, he said that this was a turning point and he found that his light printing effect had been significantly improved. Later, one of his works was even included in the Venice Biennale.

It was in Venice that Pugliese met WASP's Sebastiano and Marcello Pellecchia, and the cooperation between the two began.

After watching a series of experiments by Pugliese using his own Delta Open 3D printer, WASP gave Pugliese a Turbo 3D printer, then he developed a new accessory device, LightExtruder, and replaced it with the machine. The extruder does not require additional power and special settings. Pugliese said that Pugliese can be used on every Delta WASP, but it performs better on Turbo, moves faster, and reduces total exposure time.

In fact, LightExtruder is essentially an RGB LED plus a selector that allows the photographer to choose the color of the LED.

"All you have to do is put the camera on a tripod on the front of the printer and turn off the light," Pugliese said. "Then run the 3D printer and take the photo in BULB mode. Then the LightExtruder on the printer starts moving, printing a The virtual object, although moving faster, can still be captured by the camera. Once the shooting is completed, a miracle occurs: the object printed with light appears on the camera's screen."

Pugliese said he also often tried new ways to play with light. For example, once he used a few photos of the same subject and simply rotated the printer 15 degrees when creating each file, the resulting photos were combined in order, eventually becoming the "object of the video."

In fact, in addition to light printing, Pugliese also made a lot of interesting attempts to use 3D printing to turn the phone into a holographic display platform through the 3D printing device, which is Pugliese.
