Data-embedded LED light source mobile phone can acquire object information for light

LED billboards can quickly transmit invisible data that your smartphone can recognize. Fujitsu Labs has developed a technology that can embed ID data into LED light sources. Therefore, aligning the smartphone with the illuminated object enables the mobile phone to read the corresponding information from the cloud server.

This technology can be used to capture product data in an ad, and users can even complete the purchase directly with the mobile payment system. According to Fujitsu, this technology can be used in retail, museums, galleries or trade shows.

Fujitsu uses color modulation techniques to change the composition of red, green, and blue (RGB) in LED light sources. By constantly modifying the color intensity of each color channel, the ID data is encoded and implanted into the light source without changing the visibility characteristics of the light source itself.


Fujitsu employees demonstrated the technology at a press conference held in Tokyo on the 17th. The presenter aligns the smartphone's camera with a plastic mannequin and a traditional Japanese woodcut print that is lined up by the LED light source. The phone processes the image data and gets the ID, then immediately displays the plastic model on the screen. Product information and historical data on woodblock prints.

"Now, the concept of the Internet of Things is becoming more and more important, but I don't think anything can connect to the Internet," said Akira Nakagawa, director of the Image Systems division at Fujitsu Laboratories. "But this system allows objects to be connected in a virtual way. That's why we developed the technology."

The method does not require the use of a camera to capture the actual image of the object, and can be used under any form of light source, as long as the source satisfies the requirements for separately modulating the RGB channel, the light source emitted from the projector is also included. With a color modulator, this technology works with any LED device. These devices are now quite popular and cheap, said Nakagawa.

This technique of implanting ID is similar in some respects to QR code, NFC tag and visible light communication (VLC). VLC is also a data communication method that can be triggered by LED light source. Although the data rate transmitted by the LED is only relatively low at 10 bps, by this means, the object to be displayed is no longer required to be tagged, and the tag may hinder the display or appearance of the object. Nakagawa further added that another attractive feature of the technology is that LEDs are now ubiquitous.

Regardless of the light source, as long as the reflection into the camera lens can trigger the download of information, the system is very versatile, including museum collections to buildings, and even people themselves can initiate data transmission.

For example, a performer can step onto the stage, raise the LED light source, and the viewer uses a smartphone to point to the performer and download the song he is singing. Another example is the implantation of an ID code in the light source of the museum's collection, triggering the text displayed in the native language of the visitor.

Fujitsu is testing the technology in different application areas to improve its accuracy, and they hope to be commercially available in fiscal year 2015 (ending March 31, 2016).
