Researchers at the University of Antwerp in Belgium have said that the new light source LED produces a lot of blue light, which can cause damage to some oil painting art.
Leticia Monique, a Ph.D. student at the University of Antwerp, found that LED light sources can chemically react chrome yellow pigments commonly used by Van Gogh, a 19th-century painter, to cause color changes. Van Gogh used a lot of very bright chrome yellow pigments in his most famous work, Sunflower. Monique said that most chrome yellow pigments are sensitive to LED light sources and ultraviolet light in sunlight, and only moderate chrome pigments have relatively stable chemical properties.
LED light source has high luminous efficiency, low energy consumption and controllable light type, and is now widely used in art exhibitions. Professor Cohen Jansen of the University of Antwerp said that all museums in Belgium have been notified to use a simple method to detect which chrome yellow pigments are used in the paintings in order to take correct lighting and prevent damage to precious artworks.
